The 60th Session of the Human Rights Council
Item 2: General Debate
Statement by Ambassador OIKE Atsuyuki
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
9 September 2025

 Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

Mr. High Commissioner, let me begin by paying tribute to you for your dedicated work.

Japan emphasizes the importance of promoting each country’s voluntary efforts for advancing human rights protection. Japan continues to support those efforts under the basic principle of “dialogue” and “cooperation.”

In this connection, Japan takes note of the High Commissioner’s report on Sri Lanka and appreciates Sri Lanka’s engagement in its preparation.

At the same time, Japan remains deeply concerned by the serious human rights and humanitarian situations that continue unabated around the globe.

In particular, the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, including the ongoing famine, is utterly unacceptable. Japan reiterates that all parties must abide by international humanitarian law and secure the immediate, safe, and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid at scale into and throughout Gaza.

Japan takes this opportunity to renew its commitment as a member of this Council to closely cooperate with the High Commissioner and his Office, and to contribute to promoting and protecting human rights and to upholding the rule of law.

 I thank you.
