The 58th Session of the Human Rights Council, Item 2: Enhanced interactive dialogue on High Commissioner’s report on the Sudan (with assistance of designated Expert), Statement by Mr. TAKEUCHI Yasuaki (27 February 2025)

2025/2/27
The 58th Session of the Human Rights Council
Item 2: Enhanced interactive dialogue on High Commissioner’s report
on the Sudan (with assistance of designated Expert)

Statement by Mr. TAKEUCHI Yasuaki, Human Rights Adviser
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
27 February 2025

 Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

Japan expresses its appreciation for the High Commissioner’s report prepared with the assistance of the designated Expert.

Japan remains deeply concerned about the impact of persistent fighting on civilians and the human rights situation in Sudan. We have been hearing more and more reports of women and girls at risk of sexual and gender-based violence. There are also alarming reports of catastrophic levels of food insecurity, which disproportionately affects women and children. Civilians, including the most vulnerable, must be protected, and this includes protection of their right to adequate food.

Japan renews its call on all parties to the conflict in Sudan to fulfill their relevant obligations under international law including international human rights and humanitarian law, to protect civilians, including humanitarian workers, and to allow unimpeded access for humanitarian aid into and throughout the country.

To help alleviate the dire situation in Sudan, Japan has started two new grant aid projects over the past two months, in cooperation with the World Food Programme, with a total value of approximately 1.1 billion yen for food assistance and wheat productivity improvement.

We will continue to support all efforts to end the suffering through political solutions. Japan remains committed to working with the international community to advance human rights, and peace and security in Sudan.

 I thank you, Mr. Vice-President.
