The 48th Session of the UPR Working Group, Review of El Salvador, Statement by Minister ISHII Yoshizane (20 January 2025)

2025/1/21
UPR of El Salvador
Statement by Minister ISHII Yoshizane
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
20 January 2025

   Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

Japan welcomes the progress achieved by El Salvador since the previous review cycle, especially the improvement in public security with a significant reduction in homicides.

In the spirit of constructive dialogue, we recommend that El Salvador:
  1. continue to improve public security in the country while exploring ways to relax the state of emergency, in force since March 2022, so as to further facilitate the promotion and protection of the fundamental freedoms and rights of people of El Salvador; and
  2. further strengthen the current efforts to allocate more resources to the education sector so that adolescents and young persons can have stable opportunities in the future, and thereby contribute to preventing them from becoming involved in criminal activities.
We wish the delegation of El Salvador every success in the review.

   I thank you.
