The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
8 November 2024
Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.
Japan appreciates the positive steps taken by Brunei Darussalam since the previous review cycle to further improve its human rights situation, including initiatives to advance gender equality and empower all women and girls.
Japan also welcomes Brunei Darussalam’s commitment to ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities, including through the amendment of the Old Age and Disability Pensions Act.
To achieve further progress, we recommend that Brunei Darussalam:
1) expedite its consideration of acceding to unratified international human rights treaties, including the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, which it signed in 2015;
2) redouble its efforts to further improve the human rights situation of women and girls and to eliminate violence against women; and
3) continue to work with civil society organizations and persons with disabilities or their representative organizations to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities.
We wish the delegation of Brunei Darussalam every success in the review.
I thank you.
