UPR of the Kingdom of Bhutan
Statement by Ambassador OIKE Atsuyuki
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
6 November 2024

 Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

 Japan appreciates the positive steps taken by the Kingdom of Bhutan since the previous review cycle to further improve its human rights situation, including its ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

 Japan also commends the Kingdom of Bhutan on its measures to reduce poverty and income inequality as well as its initiatives to improve the overall standard of living.

 In the spirit of constructive dialogue, we recommend that the Kingdom of Bhutan:

  1) further strengthen its efforts to provide quality and inclusive education on top of achievements so far;

  2) accelerate the implementation of the National Plan of Action for Gender Equality and advocate the rights of women and children; and

  3) continue to take a holistic approach to implementing the CRPD, while engaging with persons with disabilities and their representative organizations.

 We wish the delegation of the Kingdom of Bhutan every success in this review.

 I thank you.
