The 56th Session of the Human Rights Council
Item 3:
ID with the Working Group on discrimination against women and girls
Statement by Ambassador HONSEI Kozo
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
27 June 2024

  Thank you, Madam Vice-President.

I would first like to thank the Working Group for its report. Japan takes note of the Working Group’s concerns over escalating gender backlash. Japan considers it important to continue building on the progress achieved in advancing women’s and girls’ human rights.

Japan also takes note of the Working Group’s intention to focus on thematic areas such as gender justice in post-conflict situations in their future reports. Japan focuses on Women Peace and Security in its diplomacy. As is well known, WPS is a concept aimed at incorporating women’s voices and reflecting their will as decision makers in the process of resolving conflicts and establishing peace.

Many women and girls face difficulties in recovery from conflicts driven by human factors that are similar to those they face in disasters caused by environmental factors. Their rights tend to be left behind in such extraordinary situations. With its abundant experience of recovery from natural disasters, Japan will continue to assist women and girls by promoting WPS in reconstruction support and peace building processes.

  I thank you.
