The 56th Session of the Human Rights Council
Item 2: ID on the oral update of the Independent International Fact-Finding Mission for the Sudan
Statement of Japan
TAKEUCHI Yasuaki, Human Rights Adviser
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
18 June 2024

  Thank you, Madam Vice-President.

Japan appreciates the work of the Fact-Finding Mission to address the human rights situation in Sudan. The FFM’s work is vital to ensuring impartial accountability in accordance with the rule of law.

The ongoing armed conflict continues to have a dire impact on civilians in Sudan, especially women and girls. Japan is concerned by the reports of the atrocities being committed by the parties to the conflict, including conflict-related sexual violence.

We call on all the parties to grant immediate access to humanitarian aid, and to end the hostilities and facilitate an orderly transition to civilian rule. In doing so, it is essential to ensure the meaningful participation of women in political decision-making. This will contribute to creating lasting peace and security, in line with the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda, which will in turn help to strengthen protection of the human rights of all Sudanese civilians.
In this regard, Japan supports the efforts of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD), especially to promote the participation of approximately 180 women in the meeting of Sudanese civilian actors held in Addis Ababa in May.

Japan remains committed to working with the countries concerned in the region and to supporting Sudanese efforts toward the restoration of the transition to civilian rule in the country.

  I thank you.
