UPR of the Kingdom of Cambodia – Statement of Japan
HONSEI Kozo, Ambassador
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
8 May 2024

   Thank you, Madam Vice-President.

Japan warmly welcomes the Cambodian delegation.

Japan appreciates the Government of Cambodia’s recent extension of the MOU with the OHCHR Office in Phnom Penh.

We also recognize Cambodia’s continuous efforts to promote socio-economic development and improve the situation of vulnerable groups, including its efforts to protect the rights of women and children.

Japan would like to make the following two recommendations:

First, ensure the protection and promotion of civil and political rights, including freedom of expression, the press, assembly, and association, to foster an environment in which people can freely express various opinions.

Second, take steps to address risks to human rights in the context of business activities, including in the improvement of working conditions, and labor standards, and in the fight against human trafficking.

Japan stands ready to support Cambodia’s efforts.

We wish the delegation of Cambodia every success in this review.

   I thank you.
