UPR of Malaysia – Statement of Japan
HONSEI Kozo, Ambassador
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
25 January 2024

   Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

Japan welcomes the efforts and progress made by the Government of Malaysia since the previous review, including its initiatives to advance gender equality, such as the establishment of the Cabinet Committee to address the constitutional issue of allowing women to confer citizenship to their children, and its efforts to work with the ILO to combat forced labor.

   Japan recommends that Malaysia:

   1) continue exploring possibilities to broaden its international commitments to protect human rights, including by ratifying core human rights treaties as soon as possible; and

   2) take further steps to strengthen domestic legislation to protect children’s rights, especially by further improving access to education and combatting sexual exploitation of children both online and offline.

   Thank you.
