UPR of the Federal Republic of Nigeria – Statement of Japan
TAKEUCHI Yasuaki, Human Rights Adviser
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
23 January 2024

   Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

Japan takes note of the efforts taken by Nigeria since its previous review, including those to enhance protection of women and girls under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act adopted in 34 states.

At the same time, Japan is concerned about the status of implementation of policies relevant to these initiatives and recommends that Nigeria:

   1) strengthen support for victims of violence against women and girls by increasing its allocation of financial resources; and

   2) improve implementation of the existing legal framework to enhance support for children affected by violence, including measures to ensure their access to education and health services.

   I thank you.
