UPR of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia – Statement of Japan
SHIOTA Takahiro, Minister-Counsellor
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
22 January 2024

   Thank you, Mr. President.

Japan welcomes the efforts and progress made by Saudi Arabia since the last review, including the initiatives to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities, such as those to improve their access to the labor market. Japan also appreciates the promotion of women’s empowerment under the Saudi Vision 2030 and measures for protecting children, such as the “Saudi Child Helpline”.

   Japan recommends that Saudi Arabia:

   1) continue exploring possibilities to strengthen its efforts to protect human rights by ratifying the ICCPR and ICESCR; and

   2) take further actions to ensure women’s rights and participation in society, including for women with disabilities.

   I thank you.
