44th Session of the UPR Working Group, Review of Cuba, Statement by Ambassador HONSEI Kozo (15 November 2023)

Thank you, Madame Vice President,
 
　Japan takes note of the efforts taken by Cuba since the previous review cycle including the adoption of decrees and strategies related to women’s rights, and makes the following recommendations:
 

1. ratify the international human rights instruments to which Cuba is not yet a party, especially the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to strengthen protection of human rights; and
2. take all necessary steps to prevent violence against women and persons with disabilities including by raising awareness. 

Moreover, we express our concerns about the situation surrounding human rights defenders and journalists, especially those considered to be political opponents.
