FULL VERSION

  Thank you.

Japan appreciates the report of the Secretary-General and takes due note of it. We share the concerns that climate change poses serious risks to the realization of the right to food, including through extreme weather events and natural hazards.

The climate crisis is a matter of utmost urgency that the international community needs to tackle collectively.

Climate change is, however, not an issue to be addressed in isolation. We would also like to highlight the importance for the entire international community to holistically address the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.

For its part, Japan has set the ambitious target of reducing its GHG emissions by 46% in 2030 (fiscal year) compared to 2013 levels (fiscal year) in line with the long-term goal of achieving net-zero by 2050. We will not limit ourselves to this goal, however, and are striving for a 50% reduction by the same year.

We also emphasize support in the areas of adaptation and loss and damage from climate change. To this end, we have recently made contributions to the Adaptation Fund and to the Global Shield Financing Facility.

In this way, Japan continues to work closely with the international community to counter the adverse impacts of climate change on the enjoyment of human rights, while recognizing the need to address the issue of climate change itself through appropriate implementation of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement.

  Thank you.
