48th Session of the Human Rights Council (23 September 2021)
Item4: ID on Myanmar with HC
Statement of Japan
Ambassador OKANIWA Ken
Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva

Since the coup, Japan has used its own channels to strongly urge the Myanmar military to immediately stop the violence, to release the detained persons, and to swiftly restore the democratic political system. We have also directly conveyed our concerns regarding the decision to invalidate the results of the election last year.

It is critical to continue supporting ASEAN’s efforts to break the impasse in Myanmar. Japan will work closely with ASEAN to realize the dispatch of the Special Envoy and dialogue among all stakeholders, including pro-democracy parties.

Japan highly commends Bangladesh for generously accepting the displaced persons. It is crucial to achieve their safe, voluntary and dignified repatriation by fostering a conducive environment.

Japan stands with the people of Myanmar as they face these difficulties. We strongly hope that the human rights and humanitarian situation in Myanmar will improve at the earliest possible date and in a manner that reflects the will of the people.
