UPR of Nauru — Statement of Japan
Mr. MAEHIRA Tomoyoshi
First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Japan
2 February 2021
Thank you.Mr. MAEHIRA Tomoyoshi
First Secretary, Permanent Mission of Japan
2 February 2021
Japan warmly welcomes the delegation of Nauru to this session.
Japan highly appreciates the positive steps taken by Nauru to protect and promote the rights of women and children, including adoption of the Domestic Violence and Family Protection Act in 2017 and the Child Protection and Welfare Act in 2016.
On the other hand, Japan is aware of challenges facing Nauru, including those related to the rights of women and children.
Japan would like to make two recommendations:
- establish measures to guarantee the protection of children from all forms of violence and abuse ; and
- further protect and promote women’s rights, including through development and implementation of comprehensive legislation and policies to prevent and respond adequately to gender-based violence against women, including domestic violence.
We wish the delegation of Nauru every success in the review.
I thank you.
