UPR of Myanmar — Statement of Japan
OKANIWA Ken
Ambassador, Permanent Mission of Japan
25 January 2021

 Japan appreciates Myanmar's peaceful general elections last November.

 As regards alleged human rights violations in Rakhine State, Japan stresses the importance of advancing Myanmar's own efforts to hold those responsible to account in a transparent and speedy manner. In this regard, Japan will continue to support Myanmar’s efforts to improve the situation. Such efforts will also contribute to Myanmar's steady implementation of the ICJ order on provisional measures.

 Japan would like to make two recommendations:

  1. consider ratifying international human rights instruments, including the Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance;

  1. improve understanding of leprosy among the healthcare community so that those affected can receive early identification for the treatment and prevention of subsequent disabilities.
