2019/7/10
41st Session of the Human Rights Council (9 July 2019)
Enhanced Interactive Dialogue on the oral reports of
the Government of the Sudan and OHCHR

Statement by Mr. Masashi NAKAGOME
Minister, Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva

Thank you, Madam Vice President.

Japan takes note of the oral update by the Government of the Sudan and OHCHR.

Japan welcomes the recent agreement reached between military and civilian leaders to form the joint authority during the transitional period as a positive step toward a peaceful transition in Sudan. At the same time, Japan deplores the crackdown on peaceful protesters that resulted in a number of civilian casualties. Japan recognizes the efforts made by both parties in agreeing to work on an independent investigation into the violence and atrocities perpetrated against civilians by Sudanese security forces since April. We appreciate the mediation efforts by the African Union and Ethiopia, and look forward to a peaceful transition toward democracy in Sudan.

Japan encourages the Transitional Military Council to cooperate closely with the civilian leaders in accordance with the agreement. We continue to pay close attention to the situation in Sudan and hope that constitutional order will be restored as soon as possible in a democratic manner.

I thank you, Madam Vice President.
