41st Session of the Human Rights Council (24 June 2019)
2019/7/3
Statement by Ambassador Ken OKANIWA
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
Thank you, Mr. President.
Japan welcomes the official visit to Brazil in May by Ms. Cruz, Special Rapporteur on leprosy. We are also encouraged by the decision of Ethiopia and India to accept her official visits. Japan is also currently considering accepting her visit.
In the conclusion of her report, Ms. Cruz described the importance of consulting and involving women and children affected by leprosy in decision-making processes that directly affect their lives. Japan strongly supports this recommendation to realize an inclusive society where no one is left behind.
With Ms. Cruz and other co-organizers, Japan plans to hold a side event at 13:00 in Room XXV on Thursday June 27 under the title, “Leprosy, dehumanisation and extreme vulnerability: How to fulfil the 2030 Agenda for stigmatised social groups.” We encourage all of our colleagues in this room and our friends from a wide range of sectors to participate in this important event.
As the leading country for the leprosy resolution, Japan continues to support Ms. Cruz in fulfilling her mandate within the designated period. Japan also requests that OHCHR and States concerned continue to cooperate with her mandate.
I thank you, Mr. President.
