28 January 2019

Thank you, Mr. President.

Japan warmly welcomes the Eritrean delegation to this session.

The Government of Japan welcomes Eritrea’s accession to the Convention against Torture (UNCAT).

We expect to see Eritrea’s compliance with the Convention leading to concrete improvements to the protection and promotion of human rights in the country.

Japan would like to make the following recommendations.
1. Bring an end without delay to the practice of arbitrary arrest, detention and imprisonment by establishing the due process of law
2. Take further measures to prevent violence against women

We wish the Eritrean delegation every success in its review.

I thank you, Mr. President.
