2018/5/16
UPR of Canada - Statement of Japan
Mr. Masashi NAKAGOME
Minister, The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
11 May 2018

Thank you, Mr. Vice-President.

We would like to warmly welcome the delegation of Canada.

 Japan commends the Government of Canada for its various initiatives to empower women as Canada makes gender equality and women’s participation in all spheres as its priority. Japan further commends Canada on its efforts to protect rights of indigenous people and welcome Canada’s accession to the major human rights treaties and steady implementation of its commitments.

 Japan wishes to make three recommendations to the Government of Canada:

 1) continue to strengthen measures to address discrimination against indigenous women and girls as raised by the treaty bodies;

 2) continue to tackle the issues related to people with disabilities and poverty as pointed out by the relevant treaty bodies; and

 3) ratify the “International Convention for the Protection of All Persons form Enforced Disappearance.”

 Japan wishes Canada every success in this review.

I thank you, Mr. Vice-President.
