Conferment of Decoration: Mr. Peter Maurer, Former President of the ICRC (21 November 2023)

On 21 November, a ceremony was held at the Ambassador’s residence to confer Mr. Peter Maurer, former President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, with the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.
At the ceremony, Ambassador Yamazaki first acknowledged Mr. Maurer’s contribution to humanitarian assistance worldwide and to the strengthening of relations between the ICRC and Japan, and congratulated Mr. Maurer on these achievements during his tenure as President of the ICRC. Ambassador Yamazaki then conferred the diploma and insignia of the Order to Mr. Maurer. Upon accepting the conferment, Mr. Maurer gave a speech, during which he expressed his appreciation for the conferment and his hopes that relations between the ICRC and Japan would develop further.
The ceremony was attended by prominent guests, including Mr. Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, ICRC officials, ambassadors of permanent missions in Geneva, and close friends of Mr. Maurer.
