Deposit of the Instrument of Acceptance on Fisheries Subsidies Agreement (3 July 2023)

2023/7/7
On July 3, Japan deposited with the Director General (DG) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of the World Trade Organization (WTO) the instrument of acceptance of the “Protocol Amending the Marrakesh Agreement Establishing the World Trade Organization”. At a ceremony held on July 4, the DG welcomed Japan’s leadership to achieve sustainable fisheries.

The main objective of the Fisheries Subsidies Agreement is not to grant or maintain any subsidy to IUU (illegal, unreported and unregulated) fishing or fishing regarding an overfished stock. This Agreement is significant, since global population will continue to increase, and it becomes crucial to ensure a stable supply of sufficient nutrition in the future as a part of food security. Japan will continue to work toward bringing this Agreement into force as soon as possible.
