On 18 April, at the Mission of Japan in Geneva, H.E. Ambassador Kazuyuki Yamazaki on behalf of the Government of Japan and two representatives on behalf of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, H.E. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs and Chief Negotiator Joaquim AMARAL and H.E. Ambassador Lurdes BESSA, signed the documents indicating the conclusion of the bilateral negotiations on the accession of Timor-Leste to the WTO.
 
The accession process of Timor-Leste to the WTO began in 2016. Since then, negotiations on both multilateral and bilateral fronts have been carried out. The conclusion of bilateral negotiations with Japan would strengthen the momentum of the process for Timor-Leste’s early accession to the WTO.
