1. On 3 March 2022 (CET), Ambassador Yamazaki Kazuyuki signed a new agreement with Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, World Health Organization (WHO), concerning Japan’s decision to provide approximately USD 4.8 million (JPY 662 million) for a project to enhance health care services in the Syrian Arab Republic.
2. Twelve years after the outbreak of the Syrian crisis in March 2011, the country continues to experience a grave humanitarian crisis. The protracted conflict has resulted in the destruction of healthcare infrastructure and a severe shortage of medical services in Homs, in central Syria.
3. This project will provide medical equipment and improved facilities for Homs Grand Hospital. The Government of Japan hopes this cooperation with WHO will contribute to ensuring that Syria’s health system meets the needs of all people in the country, including internally displaced persons.
