On 8 July, at the 50th session of the Human Rights Council, a moment of silence was observed in honor of the late former Prime Minister ABE Shinzo, who passed away in tragic circumstances the same day. Ambassador Yamazaki condemned in the strongest possible terms the incident, which took place in the midst of an election period—the very foundation of freedom and democracy. He went on to pay tribute to former Prime Minister Abe for his contributions to world peace and stability.
Ambassador Federico VILLEGAS, President of the Human Rights Council, expressed his condolences on behalf of the Council.
During the remainder of the Council Session, a number of participants expressed their deepest condolences to the bereaved family of former Prime Minister Abe and to the people of Japan.
