UPR of the United Arab Emirates - Statement of Japan
Ambassador Mitsuko SHINO
The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
22 January 2018

Thank you, Mr. President.

Japan welcomes the Cabinet’s adoption of the “National Tolerance Programme” in 2016 and thanks Minister Gargash to give us updated and detailed information, as a mark of the United Arab Emirates’ commitment to protecting the values of tolerance and multiculturalism, promoting a culture of coexistence, and rejecting all forms of discrimination, hatred, and intolerance.

Japan would like to make the following three recommendations.

First, Japan recommends the full implementation of the “National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking Strategic Plan” and the relevant Federal Laws, in order to combat human trafficking issues, including the sexual exploitation of children.

Second, Japan recommends the continued implementation of the “National Strategy for the Empowerment and Advancement of Emirati Women” and its relevant cabinet decisions, in order to continue to promote the social engagement of women.

Finally, Japan recommends the early ratification of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, in order to strengthen protection of the human rights of foreigners residing in the United Arab Emirates.

I thank you, Mr. President.
