UPR of Nigeria — Statement of Japan
Mr. Masashi NAKAGOME
Minister, The Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva
6 November 2018

Thank you, Mr. Vice President.

We warmly welcome Nigerian delegation.

Japan appreciates various initiatives taken by the Nigerian government to support the eradication of violence against children as a “path finding country” in the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children (GPeVAC). We particularly commend Nigeria’s cooperation with UNICEF to release children from armed groups and promote their social rehabilitation.

Japan has contributed 2.7 million U.S dollars for protection of children under the influence of conflict in Nigeria through “The Fund to End Violence against Children.” We expect this contribution to be used effectively.

Japan would like to make the following recommendations.

1. Accelerate its measures to eradicate violence against children
2. While welcoming the adoption of the “Violence against persons act” by the national assembly and hoping that this act will help prevent violence against women, we recommend that this act is to be adopted at the state assembly level.

Japan also encourages the early adoption of “Gender Equality Opportunity Bill” at Nigeria’s national assembly. We wish the Nigerian delegation every success in its review.

I thank you, Mr. Vice President.
